Dear Colleagues,

25 November 2012 – UN Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

The 25th of November is an important day for ITF affiliates worldwide. It marks the day that the ITF family campaigns for the elimination of violence against women. The message for this year’s campaign is simple and clear: ‘NO to Violence Against Women’.

Why are we doing this?
Violence perpetrated at work or in the home, continues to be a major issue for women transport workers world wide. Over the last few years more affiliates have reported to the ITF incidents of physical, emotional and sexual violence against women members than ever before. UN research shows that one in three women suffer from violence during their lives. Unions and union members can implement strategies to work towards eliminating violence against women.

Youth conference builds union power for future

A special ITF (International Transport Workers’ Federation) conference exclusively for young transport workers is expected to close later today in Montreal, Canada, with plans for union action on the economy, environment, precarious (insecure, part time and subcontracted) work and union-building.

One hundred and twenty youth activists from 54 unions in 28 countries are attending the three day conference in order to explore ways of building internationalism and mobilising international solidarity. The conference was opened and attended by ITF general secretary, David Cockroft.
